City-approved 25-cent increase starts Jan. 2 in some areas.

Street parking rates in some parts of Chicago will change on Saturday, January 2, starting at 8 a.m.

Parking rates in areas located outside of the Loop, West Loop and Central Business District, will rise a quarter to $2.25 an hour, up from $2. The increase is the first since 2013 in areas outside of downtown.

The City retains control over parking meter rates and must approve all rate adjustments.  In 2019 as part of its budget, the City Council approved the rate change based on a formula designed to keep meter rates aligned with inflation.

Parking rates in the downtown area, which were adjusted last year, will remain the same in 2021:

• Parking in the Central Business District costs $4.50 an hour. That area is bounded by North Avenue to the north, Roosevelt Avenue to the south, Halsted Street to the west and Lake Michigan to the east.

• Parking in the West Loop costs $4.50 an hour. That area is bounded by Grand Avenue to the north, the I-290 Expressway to the south, Ashland Avenue to the west and Halsted Street to the east.

• Parking in the Loop costs $7 an hour. That area is bounded by Wacker Drive to the north, Congress Parkway to the south, Wacker Drive to the west and Lake Michigan to the east.
